The reality is, all ac systems will lose efficiency and will do so for numerous reasons, age, lack of care, improper maintenance etc but if the system is maintained properly, the greatest cause of efficiency loss is due to oil migration into the condenser and evaporator.  Once oil enters the condenser and evaporator its molecules begin to accumulate on the heat exchange surfaces obstructing the refrigerants’ ability to efficiently transfer heat.  This single effect reduces the systems efficiency and drives up energy consumption.

With oil now blockings the surfaces, the ability to control performance is compromised, especially if demand increases like when weather may become a bit extreme.
